Claymorphism turns UI elements into soft, 3D clay-like objects with pastel colors and rounded shapes. Learn the CSS behind this trending design style with step-by-step examples and real inspiration.

First, we had flat design. Then, we had Glassmorphism (the frosted-glass look). Now, a new 3D-inspired trend is taking over UI design: Claymorphism.

You've likely seen it in tech illustrations, on social media, or in mobile apps. It's that friendly, soft, 3D "clay" look. As a web designer in the Philippines, I'm seeing this trend more and more because it's playful, tactile, and makes an interface feel friendly and approachable.

1. What is Claymorphism?

Claymorphism is a UI design trend that makes elements look like they are made of soft, pliable clay. It's characterized by its 3D appearance, but it's not realistic 3D. Instead, it's "cute 3D"—soft, rounded, and simple.

It's often used for icons, buttons, and "card" elements on a website.

2. The 4 Key Elements of Claymorphism

This style is achieved with four specific design choices working together:

  • Very Rounded Corners: Elements aren't just slightly rounded; they are often "squircle" shaped or fully rounded, making them look soft and harmless.
  • Pastel & Light Colors: The color palettes are usually light, airy, and non-saturated. Think baby blues, pinks, and light greens.
  • Inner Shadow (The "Clay" Effect): This is a key part. A subtle, sharp inner shadow is added to the top-left of the shape.
  • Outer Shadow (The "Lift" Effect): A larger, diffused outer shadow is added to the bottom-right.

The combination of the inner and outer shadows is what creates the "pressed-in," soft, 3D illusion.

3. Why is This Trend Popular?

Claymorphism is a direct response to years of flat, minimalist design.

  • It's Friendly and Playful: The soft shapes and light colors feel fun, safe, and non-intimidating. This is great for brands that want to feel approachable.
  • It's Tactile: It makes you want to touch the elements. The 3D effect makes buttons look more clickable. This can improve the user experience by making interactions feel more tangible.
  • It Bridges 2D and 3D: It's a way to add depth and visual interest without the complexity and performance cost of full 3D rendering.
  • It's Great for Icons: It has become an extremely popular style for app icons and feature illustrations.

4. Should Your Business Use It?

Like any strong trend, it's not for everyone. As a web developer in the Philippines, I wouldn't recommend this style for a high-end luxury brand or a serious financial institution, as it might look too childish.

However, it's an excellent choice if your brand is:

  • Playful, youthful, or creative.
  • A tech startup or SaaS company that wants to look modern and user-friendly.
  • Focused on children, families, or wellness.
  • Looking for a unique, eye-catching style for your app icons or dashboard components.

Claymorphism is a fun, optimistic trend that brings a sense of light and dimension back to web design. When used in a custom web design, it can make your interface feel truly unique and memorable.
