Case Study: Build That Thing - Free Client-Side Productivity Tools
This case study explores the 'Build That Thing' project. Learn how this suite of free, client-side tools (like an invoice and resume builder) was developed to be privacy-focused with no sign-ups required.
The Challenge: The Need for Simple, Private, and Genuinely Free Online Tools
Many online productivity tools come with a catch: they require annoying user sign-ups, are cluttered with intrusive advertisements, or raise serious concerns about data privacy. The challenge was to create a suite of essential, high-quality tools that were completely free, respected user privacy by running entirely on the client-side (in the user's browser), and were instantly accessible to everyone without the friction of creating an account. This aligns with the principles discussed in my article on the business case for web accessibility.
My Solution: A Collection of Powerful, Browser-Based Utilities
I developed "Build That Thing," a personal project dedicated to providing a suite of powerful, single-purpose tools that run directly in the user's browser. This client-side approach ensures complete privacy, as no data—no invoices, no resume details, no images—ever leaves the user's computer to be stored on a server. The platform is designed with a clean, intuitive interface, making each tool a pleasure to use.
- Invoice Builder: A simple yet powerful tool for freelancers and small businesses in the Philippines to create professional invoices. It features a live preview that updates as you type and an instant PDF download, no watermarks included.
- Resume Builder: Helps users craft a professional, one-page resume using a clean, modern template. It also offers a live preview and direct PDF export to streamline the job application process.
- Image Converter: A versatile tool for converting images between different formats (e.g., JPG, PNG, WebP) directly in the browser. It's perfect for a web developer or designer who needs to quickly optimize images for the web.
- Linkpage Builder: An easy way for users to create a simple, elegant "link-in-bio" page to consolidate all their important social media and website links in one place. This is a great example of the practical custom web design solutions I provide.
The Technology Stack for a Client-Side First Experience
The project was built using a modern, efficient tech stack to ensure a fast, responsive, and secure user experience, with a focus on keeping everything in the browser:
- Framework: Vite and React with TypeScript for a lightning-fast development environment and a robust, type-safe codebase.
- Styling: Tailwind CSS for creating a clean, consistent, and fully responsive user interface across all the different tools.
- Client-Side Logic: All tools are built with pure JavaScript/TypeScript and leverage browser APIs for their functionality (e.g., PDF generation, image processing). This ensures that all data processing happens locally and privately.
- Deployment: Hosted on Vercel for fast, global delivery through its content delivery network (CDN).
This project demonstrates my capability to build practical, useful, and privacy-conscious applications. If you have an idea for a custom tool or a more complex full-stack web application, I'd love to hear about it. Let's build that thing together!
